GPT-6 or GPT-5.6 Sol: is it worth moving to the new generation

A new generation is not always more expensive and not always better for your task. Three models compared by price and cache, with a plan for a safe switch tested on your own prompts.

When a new generation comes out, two questions arrive at once: what is new in GPT-6, and will it break my production. The first, about behavioural changes, is answered by the developer's own release notes; we compare what can be checked by the numbers: price, cache, context and strength index. The second is answered only by testing on your prompts, and we describe that with code. This GPT-6 vs GPT-5.6 Sol comparison covers three models from the Zukko catalogue.

Three models in numbers

Zukko prices as of October 18, 2026, dollars per 1M tokens. "Strength" is the Intelligence Index (Artificial Analysis).

ModelInput / outputCache readContextStrengthOfficial input / output
gpt-5.6-sol0.22 / 1.070.0251M445 / 30
gpt-6-sol0.13 / 0.630.0131M492 / 10
gpt-6.1-sol0.27 / 1.320.0131M522 / 10

For reference there is also the senior gpt-6-astra: 0.62 / 3.05, index 53. It is in the catalogue too.

What the table shows:

  1. A new generation is not necessarily more expensive. In Zukko gpt-6-sol is cheaper than gpt-5.6-sol on both input (0.13 vs 0.22) and output (0.63 vs 1.07), and its index is higher (49 vs 44). Model prices depend on the supplier and change, so look at current figures rather than at the version name.
  2. gpt-6.1-sol costs about twice gpt-6-sol on input (0.27 vs 0.13) and output (1.32 vs 0.63), with an index 3 points higher (52 vs 49).
  3. Context and images are the same: all three have a 1M-token window and image input.
  4. Cache. For GPT, Zukko sees only the cache read; the write is not billed separately and the first request goes entirely at the input price. The read costs $0.013 for gpt-6-sol and gpt-6.1-sol, and $0.025 for gpt-5.6-sol.

The strength index is an aggregate benchmark score, not a guarantee that a model will handle your task better. We do not claim here what exactly changed in GPT-6 behaviour compared with GPT-5.6: rely on the developer's notes and your own tests.

What the switch costs: a calculation

Assume a service makes 20,000 requests a month, with 6,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens each. We calculate two scenarios: no cache, and with cache where 4,000 of the 6,000 input tokens are read from cache (an assumption; look at the real share in usage).

No cache. Request cost = 0.006 × input price + 0.0005 × output price.

  • gpt-5.6-sol: 0.006 × 0.22 + 0.0005 × 1.07 = 0.00132 + 0.000535 = $0.001855. For 20,000 requests: $37.10.
  • gpt-6-sol: 0.006 × 0.13 + 0.0005 × 0.63 = 0.00078 + 0.000315 = $0.001095. For 20,000: $21.90.
  • gpt-6.1-sol: 0.006 × 0.27 + 0.0005 × 1.32 = 0.00162 + 0.00066 = $0.00228. For 20,000: $45.60.

With cache: 2,000 fresh tokens at the input price, 4,000 at the read price.

  • gpt-5.6-sol: 0.002 × 0.22 + 0.004 × 0.025 + 0.0005 × 1.07 = 0.00044 + 0.0001 + 0.000535 = $0.001075. For 20,000: $21.50.
  • gpt-6-sol: 0.002 × 0.13 + 0.004 × 0.013 + 0.0005 × 0.63 = 0.00026 + 0.000052 + 0.000315 = $0.000627. For 20,000: $12.54.
  • gpt-6.1-sol: 0.002 × 0.27 + 0.004 × 0.013 + 0.0005 × 1.32 = 0.00054 + 0.000052 + 0.00066 = $0.001252. For 20,000: $25.04.
ModelNo cache, $/monthWith cache, $/month
gpt-5.6-sol37.1021.50
gpt-6-sol21.9012.54
gpt-6.1-sol45.6025.04

The calculation is illustrative, but the general takeaway is this: the difference between versions is determined by the output price and by how much of your prompt hits the cache. How cache works in Zukko is explained in the article on cache reads and writes; a comparison of two models within one generation is in GPT-6 Sol or GPT-6.1 Sol.

How to test the switch on your prompts

To avoid breaking production, go in this order.

  1. Build a golden set. 50 to 100 real requests from logs (without personal data) and a scoring criterion: exact match, JSON validity, a manual scale.
  2. Run both models on the same set and save the answer and the cost.
  3. Compare by your criterion, not by general impression. Look at answer length separately: a new model may answer longer and therefore cost more at the same per-token price.
  4. Enable the new model for a small share of traffic (say 5 to 10%) and compare the metrics.
  5. Keep the model name in configuration, not in code, so you can roll back with one edit.

A script for step 2:

bash
import json
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(base_url="https://api.zukko.pro/v1", api_key="fetch_your_key")

PRICES = { # $ per 1M tokens: input, cache read, output (prices as of October 18, 2026)
    "gpt-5.6-sol": (0.22, 0.025, 1.07),
    "gpt-6-sol": (0.13, 0.013, 0.63),
    "gpt-6.1-sol": (0.27, 0.013, 1.32),
}

def run(model: str, prompt: str):
    r = client.chat.completions.create(

The golden.jsonl file holds one {"id": 1, "prompt": "..."} per line.

What can break when you change models

  • Answer format. If you parse JSON with regular expressions, a new model may add explanation around it. It is more reliable to require a structured answer against a JSON schema.
  • Answer length and cut-offs. Check max_tokens and the finish_reason field.
  • A model that is disabled or retired. Old versions may return 503 model_disabled or a retired-model error; take the list of available models from GET /v1/models and set up a fallback model in advance (handling 503 and a fallback model).
  • Parameters. Sampling parameters (temperature, top_p) do not behave identically across models, so check them on the new model.

How to get the list of available models is described in the /v1/models reference.

FAQ

What is new in GPT-6 compared with GPT-5.6?

In this article we compare only price, context, cache and strength index: gpt-6-sol has an index of 49 against 44 for gpt-5.6-sol, and a lower price in Zukko. For behavioural changes, read the developer's notes and test on your prompts.

How much does GPT-6 cost?

In Zukko as of October 18, 2026: gpt-6-sol 0.13 / 0.63, gpt-6.1-sol 0.27 / 1.32, gpt-6-astra 0.62 / 3.05, gpt-6-luna 0.04 / 0.21 (dollars per 1M tokens, input / output). Current list: GET https://api.zukko.pro/v1/models.

Do I need to leave GPT-5.6 Sol urgently?

There is no urgency while the model responds and you are happy with the result. But if it is more expensive and has a lower index, as in the catalogue, testing the switch pays off quickly: one run of a golden set is enough.

Can I switch without changing code?

Yes, just change the model parameter. The address and key stay the same: https://api.zukko.pro/v1.

To test, create a key in the Zukko dashboard and run the script above on your own set of prompts.
