Paying for AI models in Russia: which methods work and how they differ
A subscription, per-token payment through a gateway, SBP, crypto or MasterCard: what exactly you buy with each method, the fees and the minimum amounts.

The question "how do I pay for an AI model from Russia" is really two questions: what you buy (a subscription, tokens or a ready-made product) and how you pay (SBP, a card, crypto). Mixing them up leads to extra fees and to buying the wrong thing. Let us look at how paying for AI models in Russia works, how the methods differ and how to choose without grey-market middlemen.
What you buy: three different things
| What you buy | How it works | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| A subscription to an official chat | a fixed fee under the service's plan, access to its app | a person who chats |
| Tokens directly from a provider | a prepaid balance or an invoice in the developer console | code, bots and agents |
| Tokens through a gateway | one dollar balance, one key to many models | code, bots, agents and a browser chat |
We do not quote official subscription prices: they change, see the services' sites. Also check which payment methods and countries an official service supports today; the set differs between companies.
The key difference: a subscription gives access to an app but usually not a key for your code. If you need a key (an editor, Claude Code, a bot), you need to pay for tokens. A comparison in money: subscription or per-token payment.
How a gateway charges
Zukko is an API gateway to Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM models. Money goes to a single dollar balance, and tokens are charged from it at the model's prices. There is no subscription, and the minimum top-up is $1. Access from Russia works through the gateway, with payment by SBP, MasterCard or crypto.
SBP
- Payment in rubles at the market rate at the time of payment.
- The payment page adds an 8.5% fee on top. The dollar amount you requested is credited to the balance.
- Example: you need $10 on the balance. With the fee the payment page asks for $10 × 1.085 = $10.85 converted to rubles at the rate of the payment moment. You will see the exact ruble amount before confirming.
A step-by-step guide: paying through SBP.
Cryptocurrency
USDT and other coins are accepted. It is handy if you already hold crypto and want to top up without a bank. Remember the network and exchange fee on transfer: your wallet or exchange sets it. Details: paying for AI with crypto.
MasterCard cards
- A fee of about 13%, amounts from $2 to $594.
- Suitable if you have a MasterCard and accept the fee.
The payment page shows the final amount with all fees before you pay. Compare exactly that.
Summary of methods
| Method | Fee | Minimum and maximum | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBP | 8.5% on top on the payment page | top-up from $1 | fast, with no currencies or crypto |
| Cryptocurrency | depends on network and exchange | top-up from $1 | you have crypto and want to skip the bank |
| MasterCard | about 13% | $2–$594 | you have a MasterCard |
How to avoid a grey-market middleman
There are many dubious offers: "a Pro account for 300 rubles", "a shared key", "unlimited". To avoid losing money and data, ask yourself:
- What am I getting: an API key or someone else's login? A shared login breaks the rules of most services and can vanish at any moment.
- Is the charging visible? An honest service shows spending history per request: how many tokens and what amount. In Zukko that is the "Usage" page and the API. Check a couple of requests yourself: the
usagefield in the API response multiplied by the model's prices should match the charge. - Are there key limits? A daily and monthly dollar limit protects against a leak; in Zukko they are set per key.
- Is the price transparent? The price per 1M tokens must be stated for each model. In Zukko the current list is
GET https://api.zukko.pro/v1/modelsand the "Models" page in the dashboard. - Do they ask for the password to your accounts? Never hand over passwords for email, a bank or accounts on other services.
Choosing a method in a minute
- Need a key for code or an editor? Then a subscription will not do, look at paying for tokens.
- Want to spend as little as possible on fees and have crypto? Compare the amount on the payment page in crypto and SBP.
- Need it fast and without crypto? SBP.
- Have a MasterCard? Account for the fee of about 13% and the $2–$594 range.
- Not sure how much you will spend? Start with $1–$5 and set a limit on the key.
How much to put on the balance
An example in numbers (prices as of 18 October 2026): a conversation of 2,000 input tokens and 1,000 output tokens.
claude-sonnet-5-5(input $0.4, output $2 per 1M): 2,000 × 0.4 / 1,000,000 + 1,000 × 2 / 1,000,000 = $0.0008 + $0.002 = $0.0028. $5 covers about 1,785 such conversations.deepseek-v4.1-flash($0.013 / $0.038): 2,000 × 0.013 / 1,000,000 + 1,000 × 0.038 / 1,000,000 = $0.000064. $5 covers about 78,000 conversations.
This is an illustrative calculation. If you pay by SBP, for $5 on the balance you pay $5 × 1.085 = $5.425 in rubles at the rate. Active work with an agent in an editor costs noticeably more: every request carries project files and the whole session history.
FAQ
Can I pay for the official API directly from Russia?
It depends on the provider itself: it defines and changes the supported countries and payment methods. Check its payment page. Through Zukko, access goes through the gateway, with payment by SBP, MasterCard or crypto.
Which is cheaper: SBP or crypto?
The SBP fee on the payment page is known in advance, 8.5%. With crypto the total depends on the network, the rate and your wallet, so calculate on your own amount.
Are unused funds refunded?
The refund terms are described in payment error and refund. It is better to top up with an amount you will need soon.
How do I avoid spending too much?
Create a separate key with daily and monthly limits for each project. Keys are created in the Zukko dashboard.
