Paying for OpenRouter from Russia: why it is hard and what the options are
Why topping up OpenRouter from Russia usually fails and what to do: check payment methods with the service or move to a gateway with SBP and crypto. What to change in code.

OpenRouter payment from Russia is the query of people who already use a model aggregator but cannot top up the balance. The payment is declined, the card is "not supported", the crypto option needs a wallet and networks you have to figure out. Below: why this happens, what options exist and how to move a project to a gateway where payment is available from Russia. We describe another service and its payment methods; check OpenRouter's terms with the service itself.
Why the payment fails
Only the payment system and the bank know the exact reason for a refusal in each case, but the picture is usually this:
- The card. A common situation is a refusal when paying with a card issued in Russia. The decision is usually made by the payment system or the bank; ask them and the service's support for the exact reason.
- Payer country and billing address. Some services restrict the list of supported countries. Which countries OpenRouter currently supports, look in its rules and on its payment page: this changes and we cannot assert it.
- Crypto payment. The service may have such an option, but it requires a wallet, the right network and token, and network mistakes cost time. Check the terms on the service's top-up page.
So the first action is to open the OpenRouter payment page and check the current list of top-up methods. If none suits you, the remaining option is another service.
What you actually want
People do not choose an aggregator for its own sake. The task is usually this:
- Get access to Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM models with one key.
- Use familiar clients: the OpenAI SDK, Cursor, Cline, Claude Code.
- Pay for tokens, with no subscription.
- Be able to top up the balance from Russia.
These four points are exactly what the Zukko gateway covers: one fetch_... key, a single dollar balance, payment per token, no subscription. Payment from Russia: SBP, MasterCard or cryptocurrency. A general comparison of the two services is in the article Zukko versus OpenRouter.
Payment methods in Zukko
The balance is kept in dollars, top-up from $1.
| Method | How it is counted | Example for $10 on the balance |
|---|---|---|
| SBP | roubles at the market rate at the moment of payment, the payment page adds an 8.5% commission on top | $10 × 1.085 = $10.85 in roubles |
| MasterCard | a commission of about 13%, amounts from $2 to $594 | $10 × 1.13 = $11.30 |
| Cryptocurrency (USDT and others) | an amount in the chosen coin | the payment page shows the total |
The balance receives the dollar amount you set; the payment page's commission is added on top of the payment amount. A step-by-step SBP guide: payment via SBP.
Important about the cost of topping up: the payment page commission applies to the top-up, not to tokens. So for small projects it makes sense to top up less often and by the amount you really need for a month, and for steady spending compare methods by total commission. Example: for a $50 balance via SBP you pay $50 × 1.085 = $54.25 in roubles at the rate at the moment of payment, a commission of $4.25.
How to migrate a project: what to change in code
OpenRouter and Zukko use the OpenAI-compatible format, so in most projects three things change: the base address, the key and model names. A detailed walkthrough with config variants is in the article on moving from OpenRouter to Zukko; here is the shortest version.
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url="https://api.zukko.pro/v1", # was: the OpenRouter address
api_key="fetch_your_key", # was: the OpenRouter key
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="claude-sonnet-5-5", # a Zukko model identifier
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello! Answer in one sentence."}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)Environment variables for OpenAI SDK clients: OPENAI_BASE_URL=https://api.zukko.pro/v1 and OPENAI_API_KEY=fetch_.... Claude Code has its own variables: ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.zukko.pro (without /v1) and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=fetch_...: Claude Code adds the /v1 path itself.
Model names must be checked. Identifiers at different services may be written differently, for example with or without a vendor prefix. Do not guess: request the list from Zukko and use the identifier from there.
curl https://api.zukko.pro/v1/models -H "Authorization: Bearer fetch_your_key"If a model request uses an unknown name, you get 404 model_not_found. The key and balance are checked by GET /v1/balance: a wrong key gives 401, and with a zero balance model requests return 402.
A quick connection check takes a few minutes. The start is described in the quick start: create a key, make one request, open the Usage section in the dashboard and confirm the charge appeared.
What to verify after migrating
- The model list. The set of models and their prices differ between services. Check that the ones you need are in
GET /v1/models, and recalculate the budget at Zukko prices. - Prices. Vendors change prices often. Calculate with the formula: input × input price + output × output price. For Claude in the Anthropic format (
/v1/messages, Claude Code), cache read and cache write are added at their own rates; in the OpenAI format all Claude input is billed at the input price. An example for 18 October 2026: a request with 3,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens toclaude-sonnet-5-5costs 3,000 × $0.4 / 1M + 500 × $2 / 1M = $0.0012 + $0.001 = $0.0022. - Special request parameters. If you used OpenRouter-specific features (routing between providers, special request fields), check that the code works without them. We make no claim about compatibility of such fields.
- Limits. You can set a daily and monthly dollar limit on a key, which is handy for the first days after migrating.
Where to start
Create a key in the dashboard, top up the balance with a small amount (minimum $1), change the base address and key in the project and check one request. Then move the rest gradually, starting with a cheap model.
FAQ
Why does OpenRouter not accept my card from Russia?
The refusal is usually decided by the payment system or the bank, and the service publishes the exact list of accepted payment methods on its top-up page: check it. An alternative is a gateway where payment is available by SBP, MasterCard or crypto.
Can I pay Zukko via SBP?
Yes. The payment goes in roubles at the market rate at the moment of payment, and the payment page adds an 8.5% commission on top. The balance receives the dollar amount you set.
Will I have to rewrite code when migrating?
Usually not. The base address (https://api.zukko.pro/v1), the key and the model identifiers change. If you used OpenRouter-specific fields, check them separately.
Is there a subscription?
No, you pay for tokens from the balance. The balance is topped up from $1.
