A neural network for Lua and Roblox: writing Luau scripts with AI

Without guidance a model may confuse Lua with Luau and suggest outdated Roblox APIs. How to phrase the task, check the code and connect an agent to your project.

An AI model for Lua programming is convenient because the scripts are usually short and quick to check. But Roblox has its own dialect, Luau, its own services and a server/client split, and a model that has not been told about this writes "generic Lua": it looks plausible and does not work in Studio. Below: how to phrase the task, what to look for when checking, how to connect an agent to your project and what it costs.

Lua and Luau: what to tell the model

Roblox uses Luau, a language based on Lua 5.1 with its own extensions: optional type annotations, for ... in over a table without calling pairs, and the task library. So start every session with one orienting phrase: "We write Luau for Roblox Studio, not standard Lua". Without it the model may suggest functions that do not exist in Roblox (for example reading files via io) or a style from other Lua environments.

The second thing worth stating is where the script lives. In Roblox this is fundamental:

  • a Script runs on the server (usually in ServerScriptService);
  • a LocalScript runs on the player's client;
  • a ModuleScript is a shared module loaded with require.

The client cannot be trusted, so checks and awarding points belong on the server, with the client only sending requests through a RemoteEvent. If you do not name the script type, the model can easily put a reward for an action into a LocalScript, and a player could forge it.

A task template

A working prompt has five parts: what you need, where the script lives, which objects already exist in the hierarchy, constraints and the answer format.

bash
Write Luau for Roblox Studio. I need a server Script in ServerScriptService.
Task: when a player joins, create a leaderstats folder with a Coins counter.
Constraints: use game:GetService, task.wait instead of wait, no deprecated
functions. Return one code block and a list of objects I must create in
Explorer by hand.

The last line matters: the model cannot see your Explorer, and if the script references workspace.Door while no such object exists, you will get an error in the Output window. Make it list everything that must exist.

An example of the result to expect:

bash
local Players = game:GetService("Players")

local function onPlayerAdded(player: Player)
	local stats = Instance.new("Folder")
	stats.Name = "leaderstats"

	local coins = Instance.new("IntValue")
	coins.Name = "Coins"
	coins.Value = 0
	coins.Parent = stats

	stats.Parent = player
end

Players.PlayerAdded:Connect(onPlayerAdded)

for _, player in Players:GetPlayers() do
	task.spawn(onPlayerAdded, player)
end

The loop at the end covers players who joined before the script started; if the model left it out, ask it to add one.

What to check in model-written code

  1. Deprecated API. wait() and spawn() are replaced by task.wait() and task.spawn(); remind the model of the modern versions in the prompt.
  2. Trusting the client. Anything that affects the economy or player data must be validated in a server-side OnServerEvent handler.
  3. Saving data. DataStoreService calls can fail, so they are wrapped in pcall; if the model calls them unprotected, ask for a fix.
  4. Leaked connections. :Connect subscriptions on objects that get destroyed should be disconnected.
  5. Nonexistent properties and methods. Models sometimes invent properties. Check each unfamiliar API against the Roblox documentation (Creator Hub).

Checking in Studio: run the game, open the Output window and look at the errors. To test server and client logic, a test with several players is handy. If your project has tests, tell the agent to run them; third-party tools such as Selene and StyLua exist for linting and formatting Luau, but check their setup and flags in their own documentation.

How to connect an agent to a Roblox project

Studio scripts live inside the place file, while agents such as Cursor or Claude Code work with files on disk. The bridge is synchronization: a popular option is Rojo, which keeps scripts as .lua or .luau files and syncs them with Studio. Setting up Rojo is outside the scope of this article; see its documentation. If you do not want to configure anything, work in a chat: paste the script into the request and paste the answer into Studio.

For Cursor with your own key: in the model settings enter your fetch_... key and put https://api.zukko.pro/v1 into the OpenAI base URL override field, then add a model. Take the model name from the table in the Zukko Cursor guide: Cursor does not let you add a model under a name it already knows, so some models have separate names there (for example cursor-sonnet-5), while others, such as gpt-6.1-sol, work under their usual name. Cursor's official help page on own API keys does not currently describe this setting, and whether own keys are available depends on your plan, so check against your current Cursor version. Typical problems with missing models are covered in Cursor does not see models. Project rules are convenient to keep in a Cursor rules file, and that is where "Luau, not Lua; task.wait; server-side validation" belongs.

People often ask whether a Gemini API key can be connected to Roblox Studio. Roblox Studio has its own built-in assistant; whether it accepts a third-party key, and which, we do not know, so check the current Roblox documentation. A reliable path is an external editor or a chat where you set the key and address yourself.

Which model to use and what it costs

We do not compare Luau code quality: choose by price and context, and test on your own scripts. For tasks like these the request is small. Assume 8,000 input tokens (the task plus neighbouring scripts) and 1,500 output tokens. Zukko prices as of October 18, 2026 per 1M tokens, no cache:

ModelInput / output, $FormulaOne request, $
deepseek-v4.1-flash0.013 / 0.0380.008 × 0.013 + 0.0015 × 0.0380.00016
gpt-6.1-sol0.27 / 1.320.008 × 0.27 + 0.0015 × 1.320.00414
claude-sonnet-5-50.4 / 20.008 × 0.4 + 0.0015 × 20.0062

A hundred such requests in an evening on claude-sonnet-5-5 cost 100 × 0.0062 = $0.62. An agent that walks the project itself spends more, because it sends the accumulated history at every step; how that is counted is in the article on the cost of an agent session. To avoid a surprise bill, set a daily limit on the key as in the article about key limits. Current prices are available via GET https://api.zukko.pro/v1/models.

FAQ

Which neural network is best for Lua?

There is no "best of all" answer and we do not give one. Compare two or three models on your typical tasks: take three to five scripts you really need and see how many edits each result requires. Use price and the strength index from the catalogue as a guide.

Do I need Cursor for Roblox?

No. It is convenient if you sync the project to disk with Rojo or similar. Without that, a browser chat or the API is enough: you paste code into Studio by hand.

Can I trust a script written by a model?

Only after checking in Studio. Pay particular attention to the server side (RemoteEvent), DataStore use and references to objects that do not exist.

How do I pay for the API from Russia?

Access from Russia goes through a gateway; payment is by SBP (the payment page adds an 8.5% fee on top), MasterCard or crypto.

To try it, create a key in the dashboard and plug it into a chat or editor as above.
