GLM 5.3 — setup and what it's actually good for

$0.10 per million tokens in and out, against $1.40 and $4.40 official. Where GLM 5.3 fits, and where it doesn't.

GLM 5.3 is a model from Z.ai, interesting mainly for its price: with us it costs $0.10 per million tokens both in and out. Official pricing is $1.40 in and $4.40 out — more than a fortyfold gap on output.

It also handles tool calling, which makes it usable for agent work and not just chat.

Setup

Nothing unusual: a plain OpenAI-compatible request.

bash
curl https://api.zukko.pro/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer fetch_your_key" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "glm-5.3",
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}]
  }'

In an agent or IDE, point it at https://api.zukko.pro/v1 with your key and the model name glm-5.3. If your client speaks the Anthropic format, the same key works against https://api.zukko.pro — the gateway handles the translation, tool calls included.

Where it wins

Bulk processing. Classification, labelling, field extraction, translation — anything where volume matters more than depth. Here the price difference turns directly into a noticeable difference in budget.

The grunt work in an agent loop. Most steps in an agent run are trivial: open a file, find an occurrence, rename something. Spending a flagship on those is waste. "GLM for the routine, Opus for the architecture" can cut spend noticeably — test it on your own tasks. A caveat for agents with a large repeated context: vendors charge about 10% of the input price for prompt-cache reads, while we bill cached tokens at the regular price, so the real difference from official pricing is smaller than a head-to-head comparison suggests.

A 128k context window. Not a million, but for the overwhelming majority of tasks that is plenty — a large file and its dependencies fit comfortably.

Where it doesn't

Honestly about the limits. On hard reasoning, long multi-step plans, and careful work in unfamiliar code, flagships like claude-opus-5-5 may do better — test on your own tasks. The saving stops being a saving once the cheap model gets it wrong three times and you go to the expensive one anyway.

The 128k window is occasionally too small as well: if you feed whole repositories, you want a million-token model (Claude or GPT). And GLM 5.3 doesn't accept images — it has no vision.

A practical rule: start with GLM, and switch the moment one or two attempts don't satisfy. A failed cheap request costs less than a successful expensive one.

There's also Flash

The same line includes GLM 5.3 Flash — $0.04 per million in and out, against $0.15 and $0.50 official. It's the lightweight option in the line — whether it's enough, test on your own tasks. It earns its place where the answer must be instant and is simple: completion, short hints, filtering.

The gap between 5.3 and Flash is more about speed and depth than money — $0.10 against $0.04 is equally negligible next to any flagship. So choose between them on answer quality for your task, not on the price list.

Test before you commit

Don't take anyone's word for it, ours included. Collect twenty requests typical of your workload and run them through both models, comparing results and charges. Spend is broken down by model in the dashboard, so the experiment costs cents and answers the question better than any article.

The current model list is always one request away:

bash
curl https://api.zukko.pro/v1/models -H "Authorization: Bearer fetch_your_key"
