Cline in Russia: installation and model setup without a foreign card
The Cline extension runs locally, so the only question is where model requests go and how you pay for them. Step-by-step setup with one key and a task cost estimate.

Cline installs in Russia like any other VS Code extension. The trouble usually starts with models: the provider offered by default may be unavailable or may require a payment method you do not have. Below is a working setup: install Cline, point it at an OpenAI-compatible gateway, and get Claude, GPT, DeepSeek and GLM on one key. We also work out what a typical task costs.
Does Cline work in Russia
Cline itself is an open-source extension that runs inside the editor. It reads project files, proposes edits and runs commands on your machine. So the question of whether Cline works in Russia comes down to two others: where the extension sends model requests, and how you pay for them.
Cline is not tied to one vendor. In the settings you choose a provider type and enter an address, a key and a model id. If one route is unavailable, you change three fields. Access from Russia here goes through a gateway: payment by SBP, MasterCard or crypto, rather than a foreign card attached to an account at the model developer.
Interface labels in Cline change between versions. The names below follow the Zukko guide for VS Code extensions; if your version words something differently, look for the closest item.
Step 1. Key and balance
- Sign up at zukko.pro and open the keys page in the dashboard.
- Create a key. It starts with
fetch_and is shown in full only once, so store it in a password manager right away. - Top up the balance from $1. Options: SBP in rubles at the market rate at the time of payment (the payment page adds an 8.5% fee on top, and the balance is credited with the dollar amount you requested), cryptocurrency, or a MasterCard (fee around 13%, amounts from $2 to $594).
For Cline it helps to set a daily dollar limit on the key right away: an agent sends many requests in a row, and a limit protects you from a runaway loop.
Step 2. Install and configure Cline
- In VS Code open the extensions catalog, find Cline and install it.
- Open the Cline panel and go to settings (the gear icon).
- In API Provider choose OpenAI Compatible.
- Base URL:
https://api.zukko.pro/v1. The/v1is required here: Cline uses the address exactly as typed. - API Key: your
fetch_...key. - Model ID: for example
claude-sonnet-5-5. Any id fromGET https://api.zukko.pro/v1/modelswill work. - If the model settings have a context window field, enter
1000000for Claude and GPT or128000for GLM. - Save and send Cline a short message, for example "reply with one word: ready".
You can also test the key without the editor:
curl https://api.zukko.pro/v1/chat/completions \
-H "Authorization: Bearer fetch_your_key" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","messages":[{"role":"user","content":"Reply with one word: ready"}],"max_tokens":20}'If curl answers and Cline does not, the problem is in the settings fields, not in the key or the network.
Which model to pick for Cline
Any model can be called in any format, so Cline can use Claude, GPT, DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM. Choose by price, context window and strength index (the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index), and check quality on your own tasks.
| Model | Input / output, $ per 1M | Context | Strength index |
|---|---|---|---|
claude-opus-5-5 | 0.8 / 4 | 1M | 58 |
claude-sonnet-5-5 | 0.4 / 2 | 1M | 48 |
gpt-6.1-sol | 0.27 / 1.32 | 1M | 52 |
glm-5.3-flash | 0.04 / 0.04 | 128K | 42 |
deepseek-v4.1-flash | 0.013 / 0.038 | 1M | 39 |
Zukko prices as of October 18, 2026. The current list and prices: GET https://api.zukko.pro/v1/models or the "Models" page in the dashboard. A useful habit is to keep a stronger model for planning and hard edits and hand routine work to a cheap one.
What one task costs
Take a hypothetical task: 15 agent requests, on average 30,000 input and 800 output tokens each. Total input is 30,000 × 15 = 450,000 tokens, output 800 × 15 = 12,000. Formula: input (millions) × input price + output (millions) × output price, ignoring cache.
| Model | Calculation | Total |
|---|---|---|
claude-opus-5-5 | 0.45 × 0.8 + 0.012 × 4 = 0.36 + 0.048 | $0.408 |
claude-sonnet-5-5 | 0.45 × 0.4 + 0.012 × 2 = 0.18 + 0.024 | $0.204 |
gpt-6.1-sol | 0.45 × 0.27 + 0.012 × 1.32 = 0.1215 + 0.0158 | $0.137 |
glm-5.3-flash | 0.45 × 0.04 + 0.012 × 0.04 = 0.018 + 0.0005 | $0.018 |
deepseek-v4.1-flash | 0.45 × 0.013 + 0.012 × 0.038 = 0.0059 + 0.0005 | $0.006 |
This is an example, not a forecast: real tasks can be several times shorter or noticeably longer. Two caveats. First, through OpenAI Compatible, Claude is billed at the full input price, while the cheaper cache-read rate applies in the Anthropic format; see the article on cache and formats. Second, GLM has a 128K window, which long sessions will exhaust sooner than a 1M model.
If something does not work
- 401: a typo in the key or the key was revoked. It must start with
fetch_. - 402: not enough balance.
- 403
model_not_allowed_for_key: the key's allowed-models list does not include the model you chose. - 404 on every request: check
/v1in the Base URL. - 404
model_not_found: typo in the model id; compare it withGET /v1/models. - 429: the key's daily or monthly limit is exhausted, or the model provider is limiting you.
- 503
model_disabled: the model is switched off, pick another one from the list.
Other codes are covered in the article on API connection errors, and the extension setup in more depth in Cline: connecting to Claude and GPT.
FAQ
Do I need a foreign card to use Cline?
No. Cline is a free extension; you only pay for model tokens. In Zukko you top up the balance by SBP, MasterCard or cryptocurrency.
Can I connect Cline through the Anthropic format?
Yes. According to the Cline docs, the Anthropic provider has a "Use custom base URL" option; the address goes without /v1: https://api.zukko.pro. This route suits Claude models, and the cache-read discount applies there. For other models keep OpenAI Compatible.
Which model should I start with to keep costs down?
Start with a cheap one such as glm-5.3-flash or deepseek-v4.1-flash and set a daily limit on the key. If the result is not good enough, switch the Model ID to a stronger model and compare on the same task.
Cline does not see the model or returns an error after I changed the address. What now?
Check three things: provider type OpenAI Compatible, the address with /v1, and the exact model id from GET /v1/models. If the error persists, repeat the request with curl as above.
If you have not tried it yet, create a key in the dashboard and connect it in a couple of minutes using the steps above.
