Claude Opus 4.6: what it is and how to move to Opus 5.5 safely

Opus 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8 are the previous generation, and the catalogue now has Opus 5 and 5.5. A four-step migration plan: model id, your own prompts, cost comparison, rollback.

5 min · · models · development

If you are asking what Claude Opus 4.6 is, in short: it is an Anthropic model from the previous generation. The 4.x line includes versions 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8, while as of October 18, 2026 the current ones in the Zukko catalogue are claude-opus-5 and claude-opus-5-5. The old identifiers are still available as previous versions, but you should not count on them staying forever. Below: what is known and what we do not claim, how to swap the model without breakage and how to compare cost.

Claude Opus 4.6: what it is and why people ask

People arrive with this question for three reasons. claude-opus-4.6 is hard-coded in their code or agent config and they need to know whether it can stay. Or they saw several Opus models in the list and are choosing between 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8. Or they are reading an old guide that mentions exactly 4.6.

What we can say honestly:

  • 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8 are consecutive versions of one line, and 5 and 5.5 are the next generation;
  • we do not pin prices of previous versions in our reference, because they change, and we do not use them in examples: see current ones on the "Models" page in the dashboard or via GET https://api.zukko.pro/v1/models;
  • we draw no conclusions about quality differences between versions: we have no measurements of our own on your tasks, and quoting someone else's numbers without a source is not allowed.

To compare 4.7 with 4.6 or 4.8 with 4.7 there is one method: run your prompts on both models and compare the result and token usage. We cover it below, and it also fits the move to 5.5. A separate look at the 4.8 and 5 pair is in Claude Opus 5 versus Opus 4.8.

What is current now: Opus 5 and Opus 5.5

Zukko prices as of October 18, 2026, $ per 1M tokens:

ModelInput / outputCache: read / writeOfficial input / outputContextStrength index
claude-opus-5-50.8 / 40.08 / 14 / 201M58
claude-opus-50.8 / 40.088 / 15 / 251M50

The strength index is the Intelligence Index from Artificial Analysis; we quote no other quality ratings. Both models accept images. Their input and output prices at Zukko are the same, cache price and index differ, so when choosing between them it is logical to take claude-opus-5-5 and check that it works for your tasks. If a smaller model is enough for your scenario, look at claude-sonnet-5-5 (0.4 / 2): more in Sonnet 5 or Opus 5.5.

A four-step migration plan

Step 1. Find every place where the model is set

The model identifier is usually not only in code. Search the repository and configs:

bash
grep -rn "opus-4" --include="*.py" --include="*.ts" --include="*.json" --include="*.toml" --include="*.yaml" --include="*.env*" .

Do not forget environment variables, agent settings and IDE settings. For example, in Claude Code the Opus slot is set by the ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL variable, which you change in ~/.claude/settings.json (see the Claude Code documentation).

While you are at it, move the model id into a single setting. Then the next migration takes a minute:

bash
import os
import anthropic

MODEL = os.getenv("ZUKKO_MODEL", "claude-opus-5-5")

client = anthropic.Anthropic(
    base_url="https://api.zukko.pro", # no /v1: the SDK adds the path itself
    api_key=os.environ["ZUKKO_API_KEY"],
)

msg = client.messages.create(
    model=MODEL,
    max_tokens=1024,
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Briefly explain what idempotency is."}],
)
print(msg.content[0].text)
print(msg.usage.input_tokens, msg.usage.output_tokens)

Check that the name you need appears in the GET /v1/models response: a typo gives a 404 model_not_found, and a disabled model gives a 503 model_disabled.

Step 2. Run your own prompts on the old and new model

You do not need a big benchmark. 20-50 real requests from your logs are enough: typical ones, hard ones and those where the old model made mistakes. Save them to JSONL and compare the answers:

bash
import json
import os
import anthropic

client = anthropic.Anthropic(base_url="https://api.zukko.pro", api_key="fetch_your_key")
OLD = os.environ["OLD_MODEL"] # your current id from the config (found in step 1)
NEW = "claude-opus-5-5"

def run(model: str, prompt: str):
    m = client.messages.create(
        model=model, max_tokens=1500,
        messages=[{"role": "user", "content": prompt}],
    )
    return m.content[0].text, m.usage.input_tokens, m.usage.output_tokens

Then review by eye or with an automatic check: is the JSON valid, do the key fields match, do your tests pass. If your code parses answers, test the parser on the new model's phrasing. Separately check request parameters: if you pass temperature, top_p or other settings, make sure the new model accepts them and the API response does not change unexpectedly.

Compare token counts too: different versions may answer longer or shorter, and output costs more than input.

Step 3. Recalculate cost

Formula without cache: cost = input × input price / 1,000,000 + output × output price / 1,000,000.

Suppose 10M input tokens and 2M output tokens go out per month (an assumption, take your own figures from the "Usage" section):

  • claude-opus-5-5 at Zukko: 10 × $0.8 + 2 × $4 = $8 + $8 = $16;
  • the same tokens at official claude-opus-5-5 prices: 10 × $4 + 2 × $20 = $40 + $40 = $80;
  • for the old model take its prices from the "Models" page and put them into the same formula.

If you work through the Anthropic format (/v1/messages, Claude Code, Anthropic SDK), the gateway sees cache reads and writes, and a repeated prefix is cheaper: a claude-opus-5-5 cache read costs $0.08 per 1M against $0.8 for fresh input, a write $1. In the OpenAI format (/v1/chat/completions) all Claude input is billed at the input price, so for large agent contexts the format matters. More on cache is on the key limits and cache page.

Step 4. Roll out gradually and keep a rollback

Switch part of the traffic or one user first, look at errors and spend, then the rest. Since the model id is a setting, rollback is a one-variable change. Keep the old id at hand for rollback, but remember that a previous version may leave the catalogue, and then there is nothing to roll back to. So check the list via GET /v1/models on a schedule. If a model is temporarily disabled, the gateway answers 503 with the code model_disabled, and the request should be redirected to a model from the current list.

FAQ

How much do Opus 4.6, 4.7 or 4.8 cost at Zukko?

We do not quote prices of previous versions here: they change and are not part of our current reference. Current values are on the "Models" page in the dashboard and in GET /v1/models. Compare them with claude-opus-5-5 (0.8 / 4) using the formula from step 3.

Is Opus 4.7 better than 4.6?

We draw no conclusions about quality without measurements on your tasks. Run your prompts using the method in step 2.

Do I need to change the request format when moving?

The API format is the same: only model changes. Check request parameters and answer parsing as described in step 2.

Can I keep Opus 4.6 in the project?

While the model is in the GET /v1/models list, requests work. But previous versions may leave the catalogue, so keep the id in a setting and plan the move ahead.

Create a key for testing on the API keys page: set a daily limit on it while you run the comparison.
