Claude Desktop in Russia: What It Is and What to Use Instead
The Anthropic desktop app is tied to an account and a subscription. Here is what it does and three working replacements on a gateway key with payment from Russia.

The query "claude desktop in Russia" usually comes up after the app is downloaded but signing in or paying for a subscription does not work. Let's look at what Claude Desktop is, why it needs an Anthropic account and subscription, and what to do if what you need is working with Claude models, not one particular window. Access from Russia through the Zukko gateway is arranged differently: a key, a dollar balance and payment via SBP, MasterCard or crypto.
What Claude Desktop is
It is Anthropic's official desktop app. It has three tabs: Chat for conversation, Cowork for autonomous background tasks and Code for working with local files. The Code tab essentially runs the same Claude Code as in the terminal, with a graphical interface.
Download the app only from Anthropic's pages: the macOS and Windows installers are linked from the official download page, and Linux has a beta installed through an apt repository for Ubuntu and Debian. Do not take installers from forums or "repackaged" versions: the app gets access to your files, and a fake client can steal data.
Why the app needs an account and a subscription
There are three reasons, and all of them concern the sign-in scheme, not your computer.
- Sign-in with an Anthropic account. The app authenticates with a Claude account (or corporate SSO), not a key: the regular interface has no field for your own API key.
- A paid subscription for the Code tab. Code requires a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan. Subscription terms and prices change, so check the current plan on the service's website.
- Regional terms. Anthropic has its own list of supported countries, and creating an account and paying for a subscription is subject to those rules. The list is published on Anthropic's website. This is a matter between you and Anthropic, and Zukko does not influence it.
That is the whole "problem": the app has no "paste your API key" field. If a subscription is unavailable, what remains is getting the same models another way.
Claude Desktop in Russia: three working options through the gateway
Zukko gives access to Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM models with one fetch_... key, billed per token, no subscription. Three paths can replace Desktop.
Option 1. Chat in the browser
The quickest start: open the chat in the dashboard, pick a model and type. Nothing to install, and the balance is shared with the API. This replaces the Chat tab. For a "chat or API" comparison see the note on browser chat and API.
Option 2. Claude Code on your own key
If you specifically need an agent that edits code, this replaces the Code tab. Install the console Claude Code and set two variables:
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.zukko.pro
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=fetch_your_keyThe address has no /v1, and the token goes through ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN. Run claude and confirm with /status that the gateway is in use. Step-by-step instructions are in the documentation. The console agent needs no graphical interface and runs on Linux, macOS and Windows.
Option 3. Desktop clients with your own key
There are many desktop programs where you can enter an address and a key. They use the OpenAI-compatible format, so their address is https://api.zukko.pro/v1. Examples: Chatbox and Cherry Studio. In the provider settings choose an OpenAI-compatible API, enter the Base URL and key, then pick a model from GET /v1/models. Exact menu names depend on the program version, so rely on its documentation.
What you get: a multi-model chat with history, model choice and a system prompt. What you do not get: Desktop's own features such as Cowork and parallel agent sessions.
What about a proxy for Claude Desktop
The query "claude desktop proxy" implies you can point the app at a different address. The app reads routing neither from ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL nor from settings.json, but from its own third-party inference configuration. Per Anthropic's documentation, it is meant for organizations that deploy the app with their own gateway implementing the Messages API; on a single device it can be opened through developer mode in the Help section. We have not tested this setup with Zukko and do not guarantee it works, and sign-in still has to follow whatever credentials the configuration itself provides. We do not recommend it as the main path: the three options above are the replacement. If you try it, do so at your own risk and follow Anthropic's documentation.
How to top up the balance
The balance is in dollars, top-ups start at $1:
- SBP in rubles at the market rate at the time of payment; the payment page adds an 8.5% fee on top, and the balance is credited with the dollar amount you requested;
- MasterCard with a fee of about 13%, amounts from $2 to $594;
- cryptocurrency, for example USDT.
An SBP example: to credit $5, the payment page asks for 5 × 1.085 = $5.425 in ruble equivalent at the rate at payment time, and exactly $5 reaches the balance.
What it costs in use
Prices as of October 18, 2026, claude-sonnet-5-5: $0.4 per 1M input tokens, $2 per 1M output. A chat of 20 questions with 1,500 input tokens and 600 reply tokens each, no cache: input 20 × 1,500 = 30,000 tokens, output 20 × 600 = 12,000 tokens, total 0.03 × 0.4 + 0.012 × 2 = 0.012 + 0.024 = $0.036. In practice the conversation history is added to every request, so real input will be higher; count it as history tokens × number of requests × input price. For current prices call GET https://api.zukko.pro/v1/models or open the Models page in the dashboard. Which model fits, test on your own tasks: compare by price, context and strength index.
To get started, create a key in the dashboard and pick one of the three options.
FAQ
Can I download Claude Desktop and use it in Russia?
You can download the app from Anthropic's pages, but you need an account and, for the Code tab, a paid subscription. Registration and payment terms are set by Anthropic, so go by its list of supported countries.
What replaces Claude Desktop for programming?
Console Claude Code on a gateway key: address https://api.zukko.pro, token in ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN. It uses the same engine as the Code tab.
Will an ordinary chat client do?
Yes, if you need a chat with history and model choice. Enter the Base URL https://api.zukko.pro/v1 and your key. It does not provide agent features such as editing files in a project.
Is there free access?
No. Usage is paid per token from the balance. The only credit is $0.50 for subscribing to the @zukkopro channel, once per Telegram account.
