Claude Desktop for Linux: Is There a Version and What to Use Instead
An official Linux beta exists, but only for the Debian family. Its limits and alternatives for other distributions.

The question "claude desktop for linux" had no good answer for a long time, and instructions for unofficial builds still circulate online. Now the picture is different: according to Anthropic's documentation, Claude Desktop has a Linux beta. But it is limited to Debian-family distributions and requires an Anthropic account. Below: what exactly is supported, how to check your system and what to use if you run Fedora or Arch, or simply want to work on your own key.
Claude Desktop for Linux: is there an official version
Yes, with caveats. Anthropic calls Linux support a beta. Requirements per the documentation:
- Ubuntu 22.04 or later, or Debian 12 or later (other Debian-based distributions may work but are not officially tested);
- x86_64 or arm64 architecture.
Installation goes through an apt repository so updates arrive with system updates. The scheme: add the repository signing key, verify its fingerprint, register the repository and run sudo apt update && sudo apt install claude-desktop. Take the exact commands and key fingerprint from Anthropic's official page rather than from third-party notes. A manual .deb download is also available. The app launches from the application menu or with the claude-desktop command.
On Linux the app does not update itself: updates arrive with regular package updates, sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade.
What the beta lacks for now: computer use, voice dictation, and the Quick Entry global hotkey works on X11 while Wayland needs your desktop's GlobalShortcuts portal. Cowork mode needs KVM virtualization, QEMU and membership in the kvm group.
Sign-in works as on other platforms, with a claude.ai subscription or through your organization's SSO. The app does not accept a Claude Console key directly: for API-key work the documentation points to the console client. Subscription terms change, so check the current plan on the service's website.
Which distributions are unsupported
| Distribution | Desktop | Console Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian 12+ | beta, official | yes |
| Ubuntu 20.04 | no (old libc) | yes (20.04 and later) |
| Fedora, RHEL | no | yes, a dnf repository exists |
| Arch and derivatives | no | native installer (not in the formal list of systems, check the documentation) |
| Alpine | no | yes (3.19+) with extra packages |
Anthropic itself recommends the console client for non-Debian systems: it runs the same engine and supports a wider range of distributions. If you come across Desktop builds "for Fedora/Arch" from enthusiasts, we have not tested them and do not recommend them: the app gets access to your files, and it was not released by the vendor.
Replacement 1: Claude Code in the terminal
This is the most direct path. Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 10+ and Alpine 3.19+ are supported, with at least 4 GB of memory. Installation:
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
claude --versionConnecting to the Zukko gateway takes two variables. The address has no /v1, and the token goes through ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN:
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.zukko.pro
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=fetch_your_keyAdd the lines to ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc and open a new terminal window. If claude is not found after installation, check that ~/.local/bin is in PATH. Then run claude and check the current connection settings with /status. More in the documentation. For headless servers see the article on Claude Code over SSH.
Replacement 2: a chat client on your own key
If you need a chat with history rather than an agent for a project, any client that accepts an OpenAI-compatible address will do. For Zukko the Base URL is https://api.zukko.pro/v1, the key is fetch_... and the model comes from GET /v1/models. Options:
- Self-hosted web interfaces such as Open WebUI and LibreChat run in the browser, so they do not depend on the distribution: it is enough that their server starts on the machine. Guides: Open WebUI, LibreChat.
- Desktop clients. Check the client's own site for a build for your distribution and package format (deb, rpm, AppImage, Flatpak): we do not claim that a specific program exists for Linux.
- Browser chat in the dashboard: nothing to install, and the balance is shared with the API.
Settings names differ between clients, so look for the provider section with an OpenAI-compatible API and follow the program's documentation.
What to choose
- Ubuntu or Debian, you want a window with diffs and have an Anthropic subscription: the official Desktop beta.
- Any other distribution, a server, SSH, CI, pay-per-token billing: console Claude Code.
- You just need to talk to several models: a web interface or the chat in the dashboard.
You can combine these: the console for the agent and the browser chat for questions.
What it costs
Prices as of October 18, 2026. Suppose a chat on gpt-6.1-sol ($0.27 input, $1.32 output per 1M tokens) and the cheap deepseek-v4.1-flash ($0.013 and $0.038). Take 100 requests of 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens: 0.2M input, 0.05M output.
gpt-6.1-sol: 0.2 × 0.27 + 0.05 × 1.32 = 0.054 + 0.066 = $0.12.deepseek-v4.1-flash: 0.2 × 0.013 + 0.05 × 0.038 = 0.0026 + 0.0019 = $0.0045.
The models differ in strength index (52 for gpt-6.1-sol, 39 for deepseek-v4.1-flash) and in the tasks they suit, so choose after testing on your data. The current list and prices: GET https://api.zukko.pro/v1/models or the Models page in the dashboard. Create a key in the dashboard; top up the balance from $1 via SBP (the payment page adds an 8.5% fee), a MasterCard card or crypto.
FAQ
Is there a Claude Desktop for Linux?
Yes, a beta for Ubuntu 22.04+ and Debian 12+ on x86_64 and arm64. There is no official version for Fedora, RHEL or Arch.
Can I run Desktop on Linux with an API key?
The app signs in with an Anthropic account and does not accept a Console key directly. For key-based work use console Claude Code or a client with a provider setting.
What is better on Linux: Desktop or Claude Code?
It depends on the tasks. Desktop gives a window with parallel sessions, while the console suits servers, SSH and pay-per-token billing. You can combine them on the same machine.
Does the console client work on Ubuntu 20.04?
Yes, Ubuntu 20.04 is on the list of systems for Claude Code, while the Desktop package needs a newer libc, i.e. Ubuntu 22.04 or later.
