OpenAI API key in Russia: why it's hard and how to replace it, step by step
Why an OpenAI key is hard to get from Russia and how to replace it with a Zukko key for the official OpenAI SDK. Step by step: key, variables, code, errors.
5 min · · API keys · development
An OpenAI API key in Russia is a common problem for developers: the region is not supported, and payment with a Russian card doesn't go through. If you need a key to connect GPT models to your code, bot or IDE, there is a working replacement: a Zukko key compatible with the official OpenAI SDK. Below: why an OpenAI key is hard to get and how to switch to the alternative in 10 minutes.
Why getting an OpenAI key from Russia is hard
There are two reasons, and neither is technical.
Region. Russia is not on the list of countries OpenAI supports for its API (we checked the list in OpenAI's documentation on October 7, 2026). OpenAI warns directly that using its services outside the listed countries may lead to the account being blocked or suspended.
Payment. The OpenAI API is paid for by bank card, and cards issued by Russian banks don't work for this.
You could find someone else's account or buy a "ready-made key", but that is risky: the key can be revoked together with the balance, and your requests go through a person you don't know. That is not an option for a real project.
A Zukko key instead of an OpenAI key: what changes
Zukko is an API gateway to Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM models with an OpenAI-compatible API. Things to understand:
- It is not an OpenAI key. A
fetch_...key works only withhttps://api.zukko.pro/v1. Sending it toapi.openai.comis pointless. - The SDK stays the same. The official
openailibraries for Python and Node.js work unchanged; onlybase_urland the key change. - Familiar endpoints:
POST /v1/chat/completions,POST /v1/responses,GET /v1/models. - Not only GPT. The same key calls Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek; only
modelchanges. - Payment from Russia: SBP, a Russian bank card (Mir, Visa, Mastercard) in rubles at the market rate, or cryptocurrency. Top-ups from $1, no subscription.
An alternative to an OpenAI API key in Russia: step by step
Step 1. Sign up and add funds
Sign up at zukko.pro and top up your balance in the dashboard. The minimum amount is enough for first tests.
Step 2. Create a key
Open API keys and create a key. For each key you can set:
- a name, so you know which project uses it;
- a daily and monthly dollar limit;
- a list of allowed models (
allowed_models).
The full key is shown only once at creation, so save it right away in a password manager or an environment variable.
Step 3. Set the environment variables
The official OpenAI SDKs read the address and key from the OPENAI_BASE_URL and OPENAI_API_KEY variables:
export OPENAI_BASE_URL=https://api.zukko.pro/v1
export OPENAI_API_KEY=fetch_your_keyThat way, code that used to work with OpenAI often needs no changes at all.
Step 4. Check the key
curl https://api.zukko.pro/v1/models \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $OPENAI_API_KEY"The response lists the available models with their ids. If you get a 401, the key was copied incorrectly or deleted.
Step 5. First request
Python:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(base_url="https://api.zukko.pro/v1", api_key="fetch_your_key")
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="gpt-6.1-sol",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Write a regular expression for a Russian phone number"}],
)
print(response.choices[0].message.content)Node.js:
import OpenAI from "openai";
const client = new OpenAI({
baseURL: "https://api.zukko.pro/v1",
apiKey: process.env.OPENAI_API_KEY,
});
const response = await client.chat.completions.create({
model: "gpt-6.1-sol",
messages: [{ role: "user", content: "Explain the difference between let and const" }],
});
console.log(response.choices[0].message.content);Streaming in Python. At the end the server sends a chunk with usage and an empty choices, so the check is required:
stream = client.chat.completions.create(
model="gpt-6.1-sol",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Tell me about 4xx HTTP codes"}],
stream=True,
)
for chunk in stream:
if chunk.choices:
print(chunk.choices[0].delta.content or "", end="", flush=True)More examples in the Python docs and the quick start.
Step 6. Connect your tools
The same key works in tools that let you set your own OpenAI-compatible address: Cursor, Cline, Kilo Code, Codex, LangChain, LibreChat, Open WebUI and others. In their settings, enter the base URL https://api.zukko.pro/v1 and the fetch_... key (what kind of address this is: see OpenAI-compatible API). If you already have a project on the OpenAI SDK, the migration checklist is in the article migrating from the OpenAI API.
Which GPT models are available and what they cost
Prices are in USD per 1M tokens, as of October 7, 2026:
| Model | id | Input / output | Intelligence index | Image input |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | gpt-6-astra | 0.62 / 3.05 | 53 | yes |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | gpt-6.1-sol | 0.27 / 1.32 | 52 | yes |
| GPT-6 Sol | gpt-6-sol | 0.13 / 0.63 | — | yes |
| GPT-6 Luna | gpt-6-luna | 0.04 / 0.21 | 38 | no |
GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna are also available. The intelligence index is the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index; a dash means no data. For the current list and prices, call GET https://api.zukko.pro/v1/models or open the Models page in the dashboard.
Sample budget: 10,000 requests of 1,000 input and 200 output tokens. Formula: 10,000 × (1000 × input + 200 × output) / 1,000,000.
- GPT-6.1 Sol: 10,000 × (270 + 264) / 1,000,000 = $5.34;
- GPT-6 Sol: 10,000 × (130 + 126) / 1,000,000 = $2.56;
- GPT-6 Luna: 10,000 × (40 + 42) / 1,000,000 = $0.82.
This example uses October 7, 2026 prices. For GPT models, caching shows up in the response (prompt_tokens_details.cached_tokens): cached input is billed at the cache-read price, and cache writes are not billed separately.
Errors worth handling
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 401 | invalid key | check the key and the Authorization: Bearer header |
| 402 | insufficient balance | top up |
403 model_not_allowed_for_key | model not allowed for this key | add the model to the key's list |
404 model_not_found | unknown model name | take the id from GET /v1/models |
| 429 | key limit reached or a provider limit | check limits, retry after a pause |
503 model_disabled | model switched off or provider unavailable | switch to another model |

FAQ
Can I use a Zukko key on OpenAI's site?
No. A fetch_... key works only with https://api.zukko.pro/v1. You need to change the base URL in your code and tools.
Does the Responses API work?
Yes, the POST /v1/responses endpoint is available at the same address.
How much does it cost to start?
Top-ups start at $1. There is no free tier, but subscribing to the @zukkopro Telegram channel gives a one-time $0.50.
How do I avoid overspending?
Set a daily and monthly dollar limit on the key. When it runs out, the gateway returns a 429 with key_daily_limit_reached or key_monthly_limit_reached, and charges stop.
