Anthropic API key for free: what really exists and what it costs

There is no permanent free Anthropic key, and trial terms change. How a key is created, where the catch is, and what a Claude test costs.

The query "Anthropic API key for free" almost always means one thing: you want to try Claude through the API without paying anything. The honest answer has three parts: there is no permanent free key at Anthropic; whether a new account gets trial credits, and how much, is up to Anthropic and those terms change; and paid experiments cost pennies if you count tokens rather than subscriptions. Below is what you can verify in Anthropic's documentation, how a key is created, and what a test run on Claude costs with a minimum top-up.

Anthropic API key for free: what is known

The internet often mentions starting credits for new Anthropic accounts, but as of 18 October 2026 we found no specific amount or guarantee of such a bonus in the documentation. Anthropic sets trial terms itself and can change them, so trust the Billing screen in your own Console and the pricing page on Anthropic's site, not retellings.

Three conclusions follow:

  1. A free key is never permanent. Even if trial credits exist, they get spent and run out, and then you need to buy credits on the Billing page in the Console.
  2. Payment is in dollars. API prices in Anthropic's documentation are in US dollars; the payment methods available to you are shown in the Billing section.
  3. New organizations start with limited quotas. The rate limit documentation says organizations with little usage history may start in the Evaluation tier, where limits are below the standard ones and increase automatically as you use the API.

You should not take "free keys" from forums, repositories or random services. The key is tied to someone else's payment, it can be revoked at any moment, and the owner can see everything you send through it. That is a risk to your data and your project.

How to create a key in the Console

The "Get your Claude API key" page describes the path:

  1. Sign in to the Claude Console (platform.claude.com) or create an account.
  2. Open the API keys page (platform.claude.com/settings/keys).
  3. Click Create key, name the key, choose an expiration and what it is linked to. If the button is disabled, your role in the organization does not have enough permissions.
  4. Copy the key, which starts with sk-ant-. The full key is shown only once. A lost key cannot be viewed again, only replaced.

The documentation distinguishes personal keys (they act as you and stop working if you leave the organization), service account keys for CI and production, and legacy workspace keys. A personal key suits your own development.

If you already have a chat subscription, note that subscriptions and the API are billed differently, although Anthropic's pricing page lists monthly API credits for some subscription plans. Check what your own plan includes on the service's website, since terms change.

What it costs to try Claude through the API

Say you are testing an idea: 100 requests, each with 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens. That is 200K input and 50K output tokens in total. Prices as of 18 October 2026, $ per 1M tokens:

ModelZukko, input / outputOfficial, input / output
claude-sonnet-5-50.4 / 22 / 10
claude-opus-5-50.8 / 44 / 20
deepseek-v4.1-flash0.013 / 0.0380.15 / 0.6

Formula: input (millions) × input price + output (millions) × output price.

  • claude-sonnet-5-5 at Zukko: 0.2 × 0.4 + 0.05 × 2 = 0.08 + 0.10 = $0.18. At official prices: 0.2 × 2 + 0.05 × 10 = 0.4 + 0.5 = $0.90.
  • claude-opus-5-5 at Zukko: 0.2 × 0.8 + 0.05 × 4 = 0.16 + 0.20 = $0.36. At official prices: 0.2 × 4 + 0.05 × 20 = 0.8 + 1.0 = $1.80.
  • deepseek-v4.1-flash at Zukko: 0.2 × 0.013 + 0.05 × 0.038 = 0.0026 + 0.0019 = about $0.0045.

The minimum top-up at Zukko is $1. On claude-sonnet-5-5 with these volumes that is roughly 1 / 0.18 ≈ 5 to 6 runs, about 550 requests. On claude-opus-5-5 it covers 1 / 0.36 ≈ 2 to 3 runs, around 280 requests. This is not a guarantee, just arithmetic under stated assumptions: real spend depends on context and answer length. If you run large repeating contexts, add the cache to the calculation: cache reads and writes for Claude are billed at their own prices, and only the Anthropic format (/v1/messages) gives the discount.

Neither Zukko nor the official API promises a free mode, so protect yourself from surprise charges with limits. In the Zukko dashboard each key can have a daily and a monthly limit in dollars, and when it is exhausted the key returns 429.

How to get a Claude key through a gateway

If you need working access to Claude without an Anthropic card, the gateway works like this: one fetch_... key, a single dollar balance, pay per token. Access from Russia goes through the gateway, with payment via SBP (the payment page adds 8.5% on top), a MasterCard or crypto.

  1. Open the dashboard, top up from $1 and create a key. Set a $1–2 limit and allow only the model you need.
  2. For the official Anthropic SDK the address goes without /v1:
bash
import anthropic

client = anthropic.Anthropic(
    base_url="https://api.zukko.pro",
    api_key="fetch_your_key",
)

message = client.messages.create(
    model="claude-sonnet-5-5",
    max_tokens=300,
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Name three ways to check that JSON is valid"}],
)
print(message.content[0].text)
print(message.usage)
  1. For clients on the OpenAI SDK the address ends with /v1: https://api.zukko.pro/v1. Claude can be called in either of the two formats. Headers and errors are described in the authentication reference, and the general flow is in the quick start.

FAQ

Does Anthropic have a free API key forever?

No. Anthropic sets the trial terms for new accounts itself and can change them, so check your own Console. For regular work you need to buy credits.

Can I use a Claude subscription instead of an API key?

A chat subscription and the API are billed separately, but per Anthropic's pricing page some subscription plans include monthly API credits. Check what your plan includes on the service's website, since terms change.

Is it safe to take a key from other people?

No. You do not control who sees your requests, and the key can be revoked at any time. Create your own key and cap it with a limit.

What should I do if a key leaks?

Revoke it at once and create a new one. In the Console you can delete a key on the API keys page, and the Zukko dashboard works the same way. Keep keys in environment variables or a secrets manager, not in code or chats.
